Birthstone for August: Peridot

Posted by Fiona Caldwell on

Peridot, in shades of olive, is one of the few gemstones that forms in only one colour. It is formed in molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by the tremendous forces of earthquakes and volcanoes. Peridot in its basic form, Olivine, was also found in comet dust brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe in 2006, has been discovered on the moon, and detected by instrument on Mars by NASA’s Global Surveyor

Birthstone

Peridot is the traditional birthstone for August.

Properties of Peridot

Peridot is particularly beneficial for overcoming fear and depression, as well as releasing jealously, resentment, and spite in order to move forward. Peridot promotes responsibility and forgiveness, instilling confidence in ones own abilities and re-establishing a sense of worth.

Sources of Peridot

Peridot gemstones have been found in a large number of locations, including Brazil, Pakistan, Australia, Ireland, Russia, Sri Lanka, USA and Egypt.
